Description

Lead-glazed earthenware painted in enamels

Cream earthenware, press-moulded, lead-glazed, and painted in greyish-blue, green, yellow, flesh pink, red, brown, dark brown, and black enamels; the underside is open and glazed except for the edge of the base. The figures are supported on a shallow straight sided square base painted in greyish-blue, red, brown, and yellow to resemble marble. Elijah is seated on a brown rocky mound beside a green shrub. His left hand rests on his knee and he has his right hand extended towards the raven on the ground to his right which is holding bread in its beak. Elijah has a brown beard and wears an off-white turban, a dark brown tunic with a yellow lining over a long green gown, and sandals. The raven is black.

Note

This figure of Elijah being fed by a raven has a companion, the Widow of Zarephath (C.912A-1928). The figures illustrate two consecutive incidents in the life of the Prophet Elijah during a time of drought and famine, which are related in the book of Kings 17: 1-7 and 10-16 in the Bible. The marbled base of the figure and its pair are comparable to those of figures marked WOOD & CALDWELL.
