Jupiter with his Eagle
Production: Wood, Enoch (Probably)
Lead-glazed earthenware figure of Jupiter standing with an eagle beside him painted in enamels
Pale cream earthenware, moulded, covered with slightly blue tinted lead-glaze and painted in blue, green, yellow, flesh pink, red, dark puce, reddish-brown, greyish-brown, and grey enamels. The figures stand on a low mound supported on a square, straight-sided and flat-topped base, which is hollow underneath and has a central ventilation hole. Jupiter stands facing the viewer with his bare feet slightly apart. He holds up his garment to his hip in his left hand, and in his right holds a reddish-brown sceptre which rests against his body and upper arm. He has a grey beard and hair, red lips and flesh-pink cheeks. He wears a yellow crown, and a low-necked, short-sleeved tunic of dark puce fabric decorated with small white reserves enclosing red and blue sprigs, and lined with yellow. It extends to just above his knees at the front, and to the ground at the back. The eagle stands to his right looking towards him, with its right foot raised and wings extended. The mound is coloured green and greyish-brown. A reddish-brown line runs round the top of the side of the base, and the title 'Jupiter' is painted below it at centre front.

An undecorated example of this figure in the Victoria & Albert Museum with the impressed mark '79/Ra.Wood/Burslem' for the factory of Ralph Wood II (d. 1795) or possibly his son Ralph Wood III (d. 1805), which suggests that this probably later figure, also numbered '79' impressed could have been made in Enoch Wood's factory.
Jupiter or Jove was the Roman equivalent of Zeus, the king of the Gods. In art he is often depicted holding a thunderbolt or a sceptre, as here, and accompanied by an eagle.
