Winter from a set of Seasons
Production: Neale & Co. (Probably)
Lead-glazed earthenware painted in polychrome enamels. A girl wearing a long cloak and holding a spray of holly representing Winter
Cream earthenware, moulded, covered with slightly blue-tinted lead-glaze, and painted in turquoise, green, flesh pin, red, dark puce, pale brown, and a little black enamel. The closed underside has a circular ventilation hole in the centre The base is square with straight sides, and a moulded upper edge with a dark puce line running round it. The figure stands on a grassy mound with rococo-style scrolls round the front and sides. The girl has rosy cheeks and stands with her left leg forward and higher than her right. She has an ermine-lined cloak over her head and wrapped around her at the front. She has her right hand tucked inside her cloak and in her left holds a long spray of holly.

James Neale, the proprietor of the Church Works, Hanley, was not a potter but a china dealer in London. He took over the pottery from Humphrey Palmer in 1778 and from at least 1781 the firm was known as Neale & Co. Neale appointed a manager, Robert Wilson, and returned to London. In 1790 or 1791 Wilson became the proprietor. .
