Pale buff stoneware with applied relief decoration including a medallion bearing a coat-of-arms and the initials and date EVH/1576
Pale buff stoneware, thrown, with applied handle and spout, decorated with applied moulded reliefs. The jug stands on a cylindrical base. It has a bulbous body, a narrow, slightly tapering cylindrical neck with cordons at the top and bottom, a long spout rising upwards from the shoulder and attached to the neck by a bridge near the top, and a loop handle. On each side of the body is a small medallion with the initials and date EH/1576 at the top over a shield of arms: quarterly: 1,4, three escallops; 2,3, three lozenges (Herema), impaling: a rose between in chief a mullet and in base a fleur-de-lys (Aylva), supported by two rampant lions. Above is a lion's mask flanked by two flowers, and below a serrated leaf flanked by two flowers. On the front of the neck is a shield bearing the arms of the Duchy of Julich, Cleves and Berg. To the left of it is a figure of Adam standing beside a stag, flanked by lion's masks and four flowers, and on the right, a figure of Eve standing beside a doe with similar motifs. At the base of the spout there is a bearded mask and on either side of the spout four flowers. The handle has a serrated leaf on each side at the top and three pairs of flowers at intervals below. Another serrated leaf is applied to the body below the handle.

: Dated 1576 but probably mid 19th century
Formerly attributed to Anno Knüttgen, but presently considered to have been made in the mid 19th century.
The arms are those of Ernst van Aylva, lord of West-daarna and Oost-dongeradeel, and his wife Id Herema (d. 1596) of Friesland. A globular flask attributed to the workshop of Anno Knüttgen at Siegburg is in the Kunstgewerbemuseum, Cologne. It is decorated on the front with similar figures of Adam and Eve standing below a medallion enclosing a coat-of arms with the initials IVS and the date 1578, supported by rampant lions. However, the definition of the relief motifs is much clearer than on this jug, which is also rather heavy for its size.
