White stoneware with applied moulded relief decoration. The tankard is of slightly tapering cylindrical form, and has a loop handle with a pointed tail on the lower end, to the top of which is attached a hinged pewter thumb piece with two balls on its top, and a domed cover. It has horizontal cordons at the top and bottom, and on the sides three vertical panels each moulded in relief with the royal arms of England as borne by the Tudors, with small cupids in the corners, and below, a cartouche with the date '1594' above the initials 'HH'. The area under and below the handle has slightly raised horizontal bands.

The initials HH indicate that the tankard was made in the workshop of the Siegburg potter, Johannes Hilgers Knütgem, known as Hans Hilgers.
