Production: Unidentified Frechen pottery
Brown salt-glazed stoneware decorated with an applied bearded face mask and an oval medallion enclosing a merchant's mark
Greyish-buff stoneware, thrown with applied handle, and applied moulded relief decoration, partially coated in reddish-brown wash, and salt-glazed. The wash does not extend to the base, and has dribbled at the front during salt-glazing. The jug has an ovoid body contracting into a short cylindrical neck with cordons round the mouth. The small loop handle has an extension at the lower end which rests on the shoulder. On the neck is a bearded face mask, and below it on either side, are two small applied rosettes. Further down is an oval medallion, enclosing a shield bearing a merchant's mark, flanked by stars, and at the bottom, the date, '1688'. The area above the mark is filled by symmetrical stems, curling to right and left, and there are palm fronds on either side of the shield.
