The jug was purchased in Rouen, where the name Sorel is still known (2025), so it seems likely that the jug was made there. However, jugs of this form were also made in Sinceny in northern France which has also been suggested as its place of origin, partly because of the exotic bird on the mouth and cover, which is comparable to long-tailed birds in chinoiserie designs on Sinceny faïence. The Sinceny faïence factory was formally founded in 1737 when Jan-Baptiste de Fayard, the Seigneur of Sinceny was authorized to have a factory in his domaine, but was probably operating since 1733. It was directed by Denis-Pierre Pellevé from Rouen, and initially employed several workmen from that city. A cider jug of comparable form to this one and decorated with the Fayard arms is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, C.631-1909.
