Production: Unidentified Nevers factory
Earthenware, thrown, with applied handles, tin-glazed bluish-white, and painted in blue and manganese-purple. The vase is of inverted bell-shape with an everted rim, and stands on a cylindrical foot. It has two loop handles, each formed by plaited coils with a scroll on either side at the top and bottom. Both sides of the pot are decorated with landscapes in late Ming style. In one there are two seated Chinese figures, one holding up a fan, and in the other, two different Chinese figures, one of whom holds a large vase. Above, round the mouth, there is a formal border of scrolls and linear motifs. The handles are decorated overall with spots.

Large approximately bell-shaped ceramic pots with or without handles were fashionable as containers for small shrubs and fruit trees during the late 17th century. Many of them were made in tin-glazed earthenware at Delft, in Holland, and in France at Nevers. Various designs can be seen in 'Nouveaux Livre de Vases et de Pots de Jardins' by Daniel Marot (1661/2-1752).
