Description

Tin-glazed earthen ware, painted in pale blue, greysh-green, and yellow except for the interior of both parts. The tureen is in the shape of a cabbage. The lower part is moulded with applied cabbage leaves in relief, on which are two applied caterpillars. The domed cover has six applied cabbage leaves three of which curl outwards, and one applied caterpillar near the centre.

Note

The place of manufacture of this tureen is uncertain. Dr Glaisher described it as 'Delft' in his own catalogue, but may have meant this to denote tin-glazed earthenware rather than made in Delft. Cabbage tureens were also made in Brussels in the mid 18th century where there were two faience factories: the Mombaers factory in the rue de Laeken; and from 1751 a factory founded in the rue de la Montagne by Jacques Artoisenet, and continued after his death four years later by his widow, Jeanne-Marie Van den Berghen. In 1764 his son by his first marriage, Joseph-Philippe Artoisenet, took over the factory. Both facgtories produced naturalistic tableware.
