Description

Pale cream earthenware, moulded, with applied moulded and shredded slay details, coated overall with very slightly blue tinted glaze owhich has crazed and discoloured to pale brown over much of the surface. The figure is supported on a roughly circular low mound base with a low tree with four leafy branches (two missing) at the back, and three clumps of applied shredded clay moss round the front; the underside is concave. The boy stands facing the viewer in front of the tree holding a basket over his left arm; his right hand is missing. He wears a wreath of tiny flowers on his head, and is nude apart from a drape passing over his right shoulder and across the front of his body.

Notes

History note: Found with other figures and fragments beneath the pavement on the south side of Burslem old Town Hall (oposite the Leopard Inn) during Mr Bemrose's excavation in April 1938; exchanged with other fragments for a copy of Rackham's Catalogue of the Glaisher Collection, 1935.
