Barum was a contraction of the Roman name Barnastapolitum. So it seems likely that this jug was made in Barnstaple. A Phillip Burch was christened at Barnstaple on 27 February 1763. He could have been the man whose name is on the jug, and perhaps the man of the same name who was married there on 29 May 1789.
