Description

Oval, silver-gilt box pendant set with silver portrait medallions of Charles I and Henrietta Maria, and Charles II and Catherine of Braganza

Silver, parcel-gilt, embossed, chased and set with portrait medallions. Oval, the bombé sides decorated with a strapwork border of partially gilt leaves and flowerheads between two borders of small gilt spots. At the top is a compressed sphee with attached suspension loop. The oval medallion on the pull-off front depicts on the oberse: Charles I, in profile facing right, within the legend 'CAROLVS. D.G. MAG. BRITAN. FRAN. ET. HIB. REX. F.I.D'.; on the reverse: Henrietta Maria, in profile facing left, within the legend 'HENRETTA. MARIA. D.G. MAG. BRITAN. FRAN. ET. HIB. REG.' and 'T RAWLINS'. The oval medallion on the recessed base depicts on the obverse: Charles II, in profile facing left, above the legend 'PACE TRIVMPHANS'; on the reverse Catherine of Braganza, in profile facing left, beneath the legend 'FVTVRI SPES'.
