Description

Gold and enamel; oval with an miniature of the Goddess Bellona on the lid

Gold and enamel; oval with straight sides and hinged almost flat lid. The lid of the box is enamelled with an oval miniature depicting Bellona, the goddess of war, dressed in armour, a helmet and a flowing red cloak; in her right hand she holds a sword, and at her feet sits Cupid. Either side of the miniature and in four rectangles on the sides and in an oval on the recessed base are panels of translucent deep purple enamel over engine turned engraving. Surrounding the panels are borders of white enamel with gold spots, and chased gold with green enamelled leaves and set with small blue opaque enamel beads. With a fitted case (A) covered in red leather.
