Hard-paste porcelain painted in polychrome enamels and gilt
Hard-paste porcelain painted in greyish-blue, green, yellow, orange-red, grey, purple, brown, and black enamels and gilt. The beaker-shaped cup has a slightly everted rim, an ear-shaped handle, and a narrow footring. On the front it is decorated with an upper-class woman standing in profile holding a closed fan in her left hand. She has a tall hairstyle decorated with beads and a cockade, and wears an orange-red dress. Behind her on the right there is a small tree and a bush, both bluish-grey, and on the left, two bushes, one greyish-blue and the other green. Below in gold is the phrase 'a l'angloise'. The rim is gilt, and on its inside it has a border of wavy stylized foliage. There is a spray of similar foliage down the back of the handle, and a plain band round the footring.

The term 'a l'angloise' (à l'anglaise) refers to the less formal style of dress worn in England. Tea was also taken 'à l'angloise' but this cup was probably intended for coffee.
