Maiolica dish on a low foot, painted in polychrome, with The Descent from the Cross.

Pale yellowish buff earthenware, tin-glazed overall; the reverse pale beige. Painted in blue, green, turquoise, yellow, orange, brown, and black. Shape 78. Circular with shallow upturned sides, standing on a footring, replacing a higher foot.
The Descent from the Cross. Four men, two on each of two ladders, are lowering Christ from the Cross while the four Marys grieve at its foot. In the background to left there is a castle beside the massive arch of a ruined arcade, and to the right, a column with a broken architrave above it. The edge is yellow. The middle of the back is inscribed in blue, `1542/Qui se dimostra cômo il nasari' (Here is shown how the Nazarene) and there are two yellow bands round the edge.

The source for the figures was the Descent from the Cross, engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi after Raphael. The background is entirely different and there are minor differences in the position of the ladders and figures.
