Ruby-back dish. Hard-paste porcelain painted in enamel colours, two green, iron-red, black, yellow, pink, turquoise and aubergine. The shallow, rounded sides, with a broad everted rim, are decorated on the interior with a scholar seated beside a wine jar, a pile of books and a jardinière of chrysanthemums, watching two boys carrying another large jardinière of chrysanthemums between them. The rim has sprigs of finger citron, persimmon and gourd alternating with sprays of poppy, prunus and dianthus. The underside is applied with a rich raspberry-pink glaze.
