Description

Maiolica dish standing on a low foot, painted in polychrome and red and gold lustre, with a bust of a young woman, inscribed 'MADAL/ENA B'.

Buff earthenware, tin-glazed pale beige overall. Painted in blue, yellow, orange, and white; red and gold lustre. Shape 79. Circular with shallow curved sides, standing on a low foot.
A bust of a young woman, full face, her head inclined slightly to her right, and eyes half closed. Her auburn hair is dressed with a centre parting and a plait over the top of her head. She wears a white turban with a radiating design in blue, orange, and red lustre. Round her neck there is an orange necklace with a small pendant. Her gown's decolleté neckline is filled in by a V-necked chemise of diaphanous orange material. A scroll inscribed `MADAL/ENA B' projects on either side of her head. The dark blue ground is scattered with red lustre stars and the rim is encircled by a band of gold lustre. The back is decorated in gold and yellowish-red lustre with a central curved stroke and, on the sides, with three curved strokes separated by straight strokes. There are also several orange splodges and speckles.
