Soft-paste porcelain figure of a Boy blowing a Shell Pipe, slip-cast.

Soft-paste porcelain figure of a Boy blowing a Shell Pipe, slip-cast.The glaze on a leaf by the boy's face is tinged with turquoise. The underside is unglazed and has a large circular central ventilation hole. The rectangular base has deep straight sides, and rises up into a rock behind which is a tall narrow tree stump bearing applied groups of an acorn and oak leaves. The rock is decorated with nine applied flower heads.The nude, wavy-haired boy sits on the rock with his left leg behind him, and his right leg forward projecting over the edge. He leans back slightly and holds a long cone-shaped pipe in both hands.

Notes

History note: Dr and Mrs Hugh Statham; Dr Statham died 1967; Mrs Statham d. 1970; their daughter, Miss Beryl Statham, by whom lent anonymously in 1970 (Statham Loan 1-1970); bequeathed by Miss Statham (died 17/04/1990), accepted by H.M. Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the Fitzwilliam Museum.
