A study for the symbols of the Evangelists - which Piper planned initially to decorate the doors of the chapel in Robinson College, Cambridge [see PD.34-2002]. These were never realised as doors. The finished chapel's doors have vegetation as decoration. The drawing on the verso is a preliminary study for PD.38.-2002, 'Candle, Crucifixion and Stained Glass'.
