This brooch is the one worn by Gertrude Stein in the portrait by Picasso of 1906. When accessioned the brooch was said to be 'by Leo Stein'. It has been suggested that it might have been by her other brother, Michael Stein, who set up a jewellery business in Paris possibly as early as 1906 and certainly operating in 1908 and 1909. Gertrude Stein was wearing it when she met Alice B. Toklas for the first time in September 1907. However, see Ramage, 2010 who notes that the brooch was already in existence by 1903, and is therefore more likely to have been by Leo Stein.
