Description

Soft-paste porcelain sugar bowl and cover, painted in enamels in Kakiemon style with flowering branches, bamboo, and banded hedge

Soft-paste porcelain of creamy tone, moulded thickly, lead-glazed, and painted in blue, green, yellow, red, and black enamels in Kakiemon style. The basin is circular with deep sides, curving inwards to the footring. The domed cover has a flat-topped inverted conical knob. The flange under the rim is unglazed on its exterior. Both pieces are moulded with five pairs of vertical channels on the exterior producing five panels. The outside of the bowl is decorated with a branch bearing multi-petalled flowers, bamboo, and banded hedge forming two motifs, one larger than the other, which are repeated smaller on the cover.
