Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Three volumes, parchment, 220 x 165 (135 x 95) mm, vol. 1: i + 533 + ii ff., vol. 2: 574 ff., vol. 3: 462 ff. (foliated 1-101, 101a-461), 29 long lines ruled in red ink, quire and leaf signatures, catchwords.

BINDING: fifteenth and twentieth century, red goatskin over wooden boards by the Cockerell Bindery (1987) beneath medieval doeskin chemise, five metal bosses on each cover, two metal catches on upper covers.

CONTENTS: vol. 1: Genesis - Parables (ff.2v-533v); vol. 2: Esdras - Psalms (ff. 2v-572r), Canticles (incipits only), Athanasian Creed and Te Deum (ff. 572v-574r); vol. 3: I-II Maccabees (ff.2r-66v), New Testamnet (ff.67r-336v), Interpretationes hebriacorum nominum Remigii (ff. 338r-460r).

DECORATION: Column miniatures to most of the biblical books; historiated initials to some biblical books; ornamental initials: blue or pink patterned initials on burnished gold ground to most of the biblical books, blue and red parted penwork initials to capitula and prologues, blue penwork initials with red extensions to minor text divisions; borders with gold bands or rods, foliage in a variety of styles, and occasional animals and angels to each book.

Notes

History note: Probably made for Herman van Lochorst, Dean of Utrecht Cathedral. Given by Sarah and Robert Wight to Maria Mathews, 1866, and by her to her sister Ann Byam Wight, 1871. Bequethed to the Museum by Rev. E.S. Dewick, 1917.
