Verso: upper left, design for the beheading of the Medusa, which is not used for the final painting. Upper right, design for 'Perseus and the Graiae' in which they pass round their single eye so that they may all see, which Perseus, back centre, is stealing. Centre left sketch of a winged figure. Centre sketch of Perseus on a winged horse among the Gorgons. This design is not used in the final painting. Lower left sketch of Perseus seated on a rock being approached by Athena. Design for the 'Call of Perseus'. Lower centre, design for 'The Arming of Perseus'. Lower right design for Persue armed. The figure of Perseus armed and starting on his task is omitted from the final design.
