Glazed soft-paste porcelain figure of a goat standing in profile to left with its head turned towards the viewer
Soft-paste porcelain figure of a standing goat, slip-cast, with clear glaze, and dry-edge. The glaze on the ridge of the goat’s back is speckled with black, and there are paler speckles lower down on back. The closed underside is unglazed, and has a circular ventilation hole. The bearded goat stands on an approximately oval base, supported by a tree stump under its body. Its body is in profile to left and it has its head is turned to its left so as to face the viewer.
History note: Dr and Mrs Hugh Statham; died respectively 1967 and 1970; their daughter, Miss Beryl Statham by whom lent anonymously in 1970; bequeathed by Miss Beryl Statham, 1990; accepted by H.M. Government in lieu of Inheritance Tax, and allocated to the Fitzwilliam Museum

After a Meissen model of 1742 by J.J. Kaendler. The presence of Meissen models in England is known from the record of the service given by Augustus III, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony to Sir Charles Hanbury-Williams, British bassador at Dresden in 1748 which included '6 He Goats' and '6 She Goats'. The companion Nanny Goat with Kid was also copied. Both are known undecorated and enamelled.
