A Cavalier, perhaps Charles I

Tin-glazed earthenware dish painted in blue with a mounted cavalier, perhaps Charles I, surrounded by a mock-gadrooned border
Dark reddish buff earthenware, the front tin-glazed and painted in blue; the reverse, covered with greenish lead-glaze. Circular with an upturned edge, sloping rim, and shallow well, standing on a footring. The well is decorated with a man wearing a hat, and holding a baton on a galloping horse, perhaps Charles I, in a landscape with trees and houses. On the rim there are mock gadroons.

In his Catalogue of the Glaisher Collection, Bernard Rackham identified the rider as 'probably Charles II as Prince of Wales' but his features have a stronger resemblance to those of Charles I.
