Head of Job
Draughtsman: Blake, William (Attributed to)
History note: John Linnell, sold Christie's, 15 March 1918 (part of lot 165), bt. Parsons, offered catalogue 282, June 1918 (458) sold 918 to Geoffrey Keynes
Accepted by H.M. Treasury and allocated to the Fitzwilliam Museum through the Minister of the Arts, in lieu of capital taxes
Height: 314 mm
Width: 200 mm
Method of acquisition: Bequeathed (1985) by Keynes, Geoffrey
Developed from the sketch in the Blake-Varley Sketchbook (Butlin 692.92) in the Collection of Professor Robert Halsband, New York. Lindberg (Job, 1973) notes a resemblance to the head of Ezekiel in the large print of c. 1786 and suggests it may be a study for this. The style and relationship to the drawing in the Blake-Varley Sketchbook support Keynes late dating c. 1819-20, though, as Butlin notes, not necessarily his linking of it with Blake's illustrations to the Book of Job.
