Callow made extensive walking tours in Central and Southern Europe, and recorded them in numerous drawings of picturesque scenes and buildings. The present sketch was done when Callow was on his first walking tour in the South of France, in June to August 1836. He kept a day to day diary of this trip, and in his entry for 5th August, he mentions his visit to Tournon with its old, ruined castle. (see H.M. Cundall loc. cit. pp. 31-60, and 58).
