Soft-paste porcelain, decorated with underglaze blue and overglaze green ground colours, painting in blue, green, yellow, dark pink, red, pale purple, grey, and black enamels, and gilding. The cup curves upwards and outwards from the footring and then almost vertically up to the lip, and has a single loop handle. The saucer has curved sides. Both pieces have a bleu lapis ground caillouté d'or with green notched and scalloped scrolls reserved in it and outlined with elaborate gilding. There is a single quatrefoil reserve on the cup, and on the saucer a central trefoil reserve and three quatrefoil reserves on the sides, each painted in polychrome enamels with a spray of flowers, and edged by narrow gold frames tooled with a continuoous zig-zag line There are bands of gilding round the footring of the cup and saucer and dentilated bands round the rim of the cup and the edge of the saucer. There are gold lines down the sides of the cup handle and on its back, eight half stylised flowerheads of graduated size with three dots below, and another half flowerhead at the bottom. Under the handle at the top, there is a half flowerhead and three dots.

Note

Teaware of this simple curved form was named after Antoine-Augustin Bouillard, a marchand-mercier who was a shareholder in the Charles Adam and Eloi Brichard companies, and made his last purchase from the factory in January 1759. See Documentation, Savill, 1988, III, p. 970-1. The goblet bouillard was introduced in 1753. A drawing at the factory is inscribed at the top, ‘goblet pour le dejeune boilliard fait suivan La commande du 19 fevrÿe 1753’; and on the design ‘fait’ (made/done). The first and third sizes were introduced first, of which this is of the first size, approximately cup height 5.8 to 6.9 cm. with a saucer of beween 13 to 14.3 cm.

The painter's mark on this cup and saucer is unidentified, but is closest to that of Jacque Fontaine (1734/5-1807?) , who worked for the factory between 1752-75, which has a dot in the centre of the group of four dots. Fontaine had previously been a fan painter and at Sèvres was initially a flower painter. However, the cup and saucer are considered to have been decorated in the 19th century.
