Pot à sucre Hébert from a dejeuner

Soft-paste porcelain sugar basin and cover, decorated with an underglaze blue ground, reserves painted in enamels with scenes of a peasant boy and girl, and gilding
Soft-paste porcelain decorated with an underglaze blue ground, painting in blue, several shades of green yellow, pink, red, pale purple, pale and dark brown enamels, and gilding. The basin has double-curved sides. The cover is slightly domed and is surmounted by a knob in the shape of a multi-petalled flower a stalk with two leaves. The bleu lapis ground is caillouté in gold. The basin, has two pear-shaped reserves, and the cover two shaped shallow D-shaped reserves, framed en suite with those on the cup and saucer. The two on the basin are painted in polychrome with two different scenes: in one, a peasant boy leaning on a barrel while talking to a seated girl outside a cottage with a landscape in the background; and in the other, a standing peasant girl comforts a seated boy with his head in her apron outside a building with a barrel on the left, and buildings, a fence and two trees on the right. One reserve on the cover is painted with a building and fence beside a tree in a landscape, and the other with a monument in a landscape. The knob is pink with gilt stalk and leaves. There are gold bands round the foot and rim of the basin, the upper one round the rim dentilated on the interior, and on band round the edge of the cover.

: The basin bears the date letter for 1759 but the object may have been made in 1760
Genre scenes of peasants in the style of David Teniers the Younger (1610-90), derived from, or inspired by prints by Jacques-Phlippe Lebas, were very popular as decoration on Sèvres during the 1760s (see Documention, Cairey, 2007).
Objects described as 'Hébert' have double-curved outlines. The form was probably named after Thomas-Joachim Hébert, a marchand-mercier in the rue St Honoré. Another possibility is that the form was named after Hébert, secrétaire du roi, who was a member of the committee which supervised the transfer of the Charles Adam Company to the Eloi Brichard Company in 1752-3 (see Documentation Savill, Vol. III, p. 983). The pot à sucre Hébert was made in two sizes from 1753, and a third size from 1755. A drawing of the outline dated 19 February 1753 survives in the factory's archive at Sèvres. This bowl is of the third size with a height of about 7.5 to 9 cm.
