Soft-paste porcelain cup and saucer, painted in enamels with linked panels of mosaic pattern, and gilded.
Soft-paste porcelain, painted in blue, green, yellow, dark pink, red, and pale purple enamels, and gilded. The cup has double curved sides and an entwined branch handle. The saucer is circular with curved sides. Both pieces have a suspension hole in the footring. The upper part of the cup and the inside of the saucer have a sablé d'or ground and are decorated with quatrefoil panels (three on the cup and four on the saucer) outlined in gold and painted with a blue, gold and red mosaic pattern. These are linked by pale purple ribbons and bows and swags of polychrome flowers. Below there are swags of green leaves and red berries The swags of leaves have been extended at two points on the cup to conceal defects in the glaze. On the saucer they form an eight-sided figure surrounding the centre. There is a band of gilding round the foot of the cup and dentilated bands round its rim and the edge of the saucer.

: The saucer bears the date letter for 1767
The painter and gilder Le Guay was mentioned in the overtime records in 1767 as painting ‘mosaique colorée’, ‘frizes colorées du p[remi]er ordre’ and mouches d’or’ (AMNS 9, 1767) and in 1768’frizes riches’, regulieres’ and ‘ordinaires’ (AMNS F 10, 1768). This is a gobelet Hébert and soucoupe of the second size. Objects described as 'Hébert' have double-curved (pear-shaped) outlines. The form was probably named after a Hébert, secrétaire du roi, who was a member of the committee which supervised the transfer of the Charles Adam Company to the Eloi Brichard Company in 1752-3 (see Documentation Savill, Vol. III, p. 983).Alternatively, it could have been after Thomas-Joachim Hébert, a marchand-mercier in the rue St Honoré. For the association of this type of cup with the name gobelet Hébert (see Documentation Eriksen, 1968).
