Description

Soft-paste porcelain milk jug, decorated with a pink pointillé ground, a reserve painted in enamels with a marine trophy, garlands and swags of leaves and berries, and gilding

Soft-paste porcelain painted in dark blue, greyish-green, pink, red, brown, and grey enamels, and gilded. The jug stands on three branch feet. Its bulbous body contracts at the neck and flares upwards and outwards towards the notched rim which is elongated at the front to form a lip. The crabstock handle rises up from the rim and curves upwards and then outwards and downwards until it meets the most bulbous part of the body. Small sprays of flowers and leaves in relief sprout from the junctions of the legs and handle with the body. The jug has a pink pointillé ground, with one large rounded reserve on the front and two smaller oval reserves on the sides linked by curved channels all edged by a continuous gold band. The reserves enclose by garlands of green leaves and blue berries linked by swags of the same within the curved channels. The large reserve is painted within the garland with a marine trophy comprising an anchor, seaweed, coral, a fishing rod and a shell overflowing with water. The rim is edged by a gold band, and the relief sprays, and the details of the handle and feet are gilded.
