Hand, of slip-cast earthenware, covered in pink translucent glaze

Hand. White earthenware, slip-cast, and covered in dark pink translucent glaze which has formed pools on the base. The thumb and fingers of the hand are slightly bent, and it is cut off flat at the wrist, which forms a base. There is a small slit ventilation hole in the middle of the base.


History note: Sir John Tresidder Sheppard (1881-1968), Provost of King's College, Cambridge; his executor, Roderick Ewen (Angus) Macpherson (1917- 2000); found amongs the papers and artefacts of Macpherson by Dr Rosalind Moad, archivist of King's in 2003

This hand was made from a mould taken from life cast of a hand, probably that of the maker Jean Lopez. The hand was described as porcelain by the former owner, but is not translucent.

Shepperd believed that it was porcelain, but the material is not trranslucent and the fabric revealed by the broken finger is not porcelain Earthenware
