'Dos de Mayo' or Second of May Uprising of 1808 was a rebellion by the people of Madrid against the occupation of the city by French troops, provoking repression by the French Imperial forces.
History note: Bought by H.S. Reitlinger from James Rimell & Son, 53, Shaftesbury Avenue, London, W. The fan leaves are listed as lot no. 368 on p.24 of the auction catalogue (date unknown): 'Collection of 9 Curious Engravings (4 COLOURED) designed for fans ...'. Rimell & Son were based at 53, Shaftesbury Avenue from just after 1900 until the late 1920s.
