Lidded Jar

Earthenware, hand-built, and glazed with clear, pink and yellow glazes
White earthenware, hand-built, and covered with clear, pale pink, and pale yellow glazes. Square in plan, standing on four squishy-looking legs. Each side is constructed from three rows of two squares with shaped edges which produce an elevation with three concave curves at each corner, and a slightly domed top with a circular aperture in the centre to take the lid. The circular slip-cast ? lid has a raised, curved edge, and rises up in the centre into a ball knop.

Text from object entry in A. Game (2016) ‘Contemporary British Crafts: The Goodison Gift to the Fitzwilliam Museum’. London: Philip Wilson Publishers: Richard Slee studied Industrial Design then Ceramics at the Central School of Art and Design (1965–70). He began working as an arts technician before establishing a studio in London in 1975, then moving to Brighton in 1980. He gained an MA by project at the Royal College of Art, London (1988). Having taught at art schools in both Britain and abroad, Slee became Professor at the University of the Arts, London in 1992, and was Course Director of Ceramics at Camberwell College of Arts between 1995 and 1998. He is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of the Arts and lives and works in London. Over a forty-year career, Slee has revealed himself to be one of Britain’s most versatile artists, reading objects perceptively as both ceramic technician (described by one museum curator as ‘the grand wizard of ceramic art’) and an inveterate collector of everyday things. He has a fascination with ‘the great indoors’ creating objects that challenge perceptions of utility, making and ornament in daily life. This work was first exhibited in Against Nature at Sight Specific Gallery in Sussex in 1993. Richard Slee: ‘I am interested in the power of my art being in the home and of a human scale.
