Oak pier table with rectangular green marble top above two panelled frieze drawers, supported by two carved lion monopodia rising from plinth bases projecting from the solid panelled back; one of a pair with M.21-1983.

History note: Fine English Furniture Pewter and Metalwork Supplied to Mr. William Preston of Ellel Grange (built 1860) in 1867; sold Christies's 22 October 1979, lot 39; sold Christies' 24 February 1983, lot. 137; purchased for the Fitzwilliam Museum by Jonathan Harris

Note

Pier tables were intended to stand against the piers between window openings, often below a mirror. This pair was supplied in 1867 to Mr William Preston of Ellel Grange (built 1860).
