History note: Paul Guillaume; Alfred Poyet, rue de Boëtie, Paris; sold to Sir Michael Sadler (sale agreed 24 Sept 1937, FF30,000 discounted to FF27,000 with a group of other works); a period described by his son Michael Sadleir as the final stage of his collecting, on move to The Rookery, Headington, Oxon. Following Sadler's death in 1943, sold through Leicester Galleries with much of the rest of the collection, March 1944; Mrs Oliver Parker; by descent to T.O. Parker, on loan to the Fitzwilliam Museum since 1983

Production date: circa AD 1915

Note

Subject formerly identified as Beatrice Hasting, although the features bear little resemblance with other portraits of her by Modigliani; the portrait shows the influence of the stone sculpture and caryatid drawings which he was executing around 1911-12, while the expressionless gaze has the haunting effect of the African masks which influenced his work around this time.
