Kermes

Scope note

One of the most ancient types of red natural organic dye, also used as a lake pigment, prepared from the bodies of the female scale insect, Kermes vermillo Planch; formerly incorrectly said to have been prepared from Coccus ilicis. It is a chief coloring component of carmine.
