Description

Band sampler, linen, worked with polychrome silks and silver metal thread in a variety of stitches. the sampler is divided into three sections containing repeat border patterns, alphabets, a date, religious verses and the name of the maker.

Linen band sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, Montenegrin cross, eyelet, Algerian eye, chain, hem, satin and counted satin stitch. Silver metal thread is worked in cross, eyelet and chain stitch. There is a plain selvedge at the bottom and the other edges arte hemmed in pink silk. There are three main sections. The top section contains narrow repeating geometric border patterns, three alphabets, a set of numerals and the date 1707. The second and main part of the sampler contains an inscription within a floral arch with a crown and lozenges on either side above, and below there is another inscription between floral sprays with similar crowns and lozenges. The inscriptions read 'The/3 Chap of John/vers the 16/For God so loved the wo/rld that he Gave his only/begotten Son that whoso/ever believeth in him/should not perish but have/everlasting life', ' The 17 Chap/of John vers the 3/And this is life eternal that they might/know thee the only true God and/Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent'. The last narrow section has a wavy band border and the inscription 'Made by Iane Bacon In The/Year 1707'
