Black basalt, partly gilt. the sides rise from the base in a convex curve and then slope upwards into a cylindrical neck which widens slightly towards the rim. The lower part is smooth, the sloping area is textured, and the neck is smooth. The lower part of the neck is encircled by a broad gilt band.
History note: Purchased by the donor at an exhibition of Wedgwood in 1966

Peter Wall was trained at Wimbledon and Burslem Schools of Art, and at the RCA. He became a designer at Barlaston from 1951; Deputy Art Director, 1954-66, and Design Manager, 1966-8. In 1970 he became head of the School of Ceramics at Birmingham College of Art, and retired in 1988. He designed, table-ware, nursery-ware, and ornamental ware.
