Black basalt, partly gilt. The sides rise from the base in a convex curve and then slope upwards into a cylindrical neck which widens slightly towards the rim (bottle-shaped). The lower part is smooth, the sloping area is textured, and the neck is smooth. The lower part of the neck is encircled by a broad gilt band.
History note: Purchased by the donor at an exhibition of Wedgwood in 1966

Peter Wall was trained at Wimbledon and Burslem Schools of Art, and at the RCA. He became a designer at Barlaston from 1951; Deputy Art Director, 1954-66, and Design Manager, 1966-8. In 1970 he became head of the School of Ceramics at Birmingham College of Art, and retired in 1988. He designed, table-ware, nursery-ware, and ornamental ware.
