Description

Soft-paste porcelain inkwell, painted in enamels in famille rose style, and inscribed 'MADE AT NEW CANTON 1750'

Soft-paste porcelain, painted overglaze in pink, yellow, green, blue, and manganese-purple enamels. The cylindrical inkwell has flat shoulders, pierced with five holes for pens, and a short, cylindrical neck. The top is inscribed around the shoulders in capital letters in manganese ‘MADE AT NEW CANTON 1750’. The sides are painted in famille-rose palette after a Kakiemon original, with bamboo and scrolling prunus branches growing from banded hedge.

History note: Stoner & Evans, London, from whom purchased on 16 June 1938 for £50 by Cecil Vavasseur Fisher, 2nd Lord Fisher of Kilverstone (1868-1955); given jointly with his wife, Jane (née Morgan) (d. 1955)
