Potter: Spira, Rupert
Stoneware, thrown, with incised decoration through black pigment over white glaze; interior of footring and base are black, and not decorated. The bowl stands on a high circular foot. Originally circular, the sides of the bowl have been pushed upwards at the sides so that the form has become oval. The interior is incised with concentric bands of calligraphic decoration, and on the exterior has similar decoration radiating from the exterior of the footring.

Text from object entry in A. Game (2016) ‘Contemporary British Crafts: The Goodison Gift to the Fitzwilliam Museum’. London: Philip Wilson Publishers: This large hand-thrown and turned bowl is an exceptional example of the potter’s art in both form and surface. It represents the culmination of Spira’s experiments in this area. ‘Morandi’s paintings … are object lessons in the most literal sense. They demonstrate both what painting can do and also what language cannot encompass. There is something like this at work in Rupert Spira’s pots.’ Edward Lucie-Smith, art historian, author and critic.
