Description

Silver; sloping cylindrical sides with flared rim and girdle of spiky ornament

Silver; the sloping cylindrical sides with flared rim are engraved at the top with a band of strapwork containing three oval vignettes of the trades (a falconer, a woman spinning and a woman(?) with column). Three-quarters of the way down the body is an applied band of spiky ornament. Beneath this is a band of geometric ornament. The slightly domed spreading circular foot is cast with alternating panels of winged cherub's heads and scrolls and flowers.

Note

Lucas Fockens Woldendorp flourished from 1660 to 1680. This type of beaker, with its base separated from the plain body by a girdle of spikes, is common in Groningen, and also occurs in Oost-Freisland.
