Description

Jar with loop handles. Stoneware, thrown with applied lugs, and celadon-glazed. This small jar has a wide almost straight mouth, a sloping angled shoulder and gently tapering sides. The footring is low and thin. Four loop handles are attached on the shoulder. Single lines are incised around neck and shoulder. The glaze has a clear pale bluish-green jade colour with a subtle gloss. A prominent crackle runs around the foot and below the shoulder is a rough patch where the vessel touched the enclosing saggar while it was in the kiln. The footring is completely glazed and the base shows two quartzite spur-marks only, because the jar fell to one side and leaned against the saggar.

Note

This small jar once probably had a lid that could be fastened to the loop handles; it probably represented the inner jar of a two-part set and may have been used as a container for placenta. Its precise shape and fine clear glaze mark this jar as a product of kiln no.7 at Sadang-ri, Kangjin-gun, South Cholla province.
