Description

Silver-gilt; the oval bowl is attached by the prongs of a fork to a hinged handle, with a finial is in the form of a warrior.

Silver-gilt; the spoon's oval bowl is attached by five loops on its back to a three-pronged fork. The base of the fork's handle is hinged and the folding mechanism held in place by a slide. The handle, which is square in cross-section, has a finial in the form of a standing warrior. The front of the bowl of the spoon is engraved with a swag of ribbons fruit and flowers. The base of the fork has an applied openwork plaque of scrolls and a mask. The handle is engraved with a patten of diaperwork. The slide is in the form of a female mask and swags of drapery. The finial is of a cloaked warrior holding one arm aloft.

Acquisition and important dates

Method of acquisition: Bequeathed (1912) by Marlay, Charles Brinsley

Note

The spoon bears the marks of a crowned hand, similar to the mark for Antwerp and the maker's mark 'UC'. However it is thought that these marks are not genuine 16th or 17th century marks, and that the spoon is a late 19th century copy.
