Description

Box with garden scene. Lacquer on wooden core, inlaid with mother of pearl. This square box is completely enclosed by its cover, which fits over it and reaches down to the base. The black lacquer is inlaid in mother of pearl. On top is a scene showing a pair of birds perched on the branches of an old prunus tree, surrounded by stems of bamboo, with the sun, moon and clouds above. The top is surrounded by a toothed border, which is repeated on the sides above a peony scroll. The box is lined with silk of twentieth-century date.
