Mother-of-pearl and gilt metal; unusually small, with fig-shaped mother-of-pearl bowl on a narrow gilt metal handle with finial of a Roman soldier's head

Mother-of-pearl and gilt metal; unusually small, the shallow fig-shaped mother-of-pearl bowl has a broad rat-tail carved on the back. It is pinned to a gilt metal narrow stem, which is engraved on the back with scrolls. It terminates in a cast finial in the form of a scroll supporting the head of a Roman soldier.

It is unusual for the decoration to be on the back of the handle, or for the soldier to face backwards, so the handle was probably attached the wrong way round at some point in its history.
