Description

Verge watch in silver pair case.

MOVEMENT: Full plate movement engraved 'Jno Hyland London 18425'. Balance cock with table and foot pierced and chased, steel balance. Slide plate pierced and chased, silver regulation dial with radial Arabic figures 1 to 6. Pierced fusee iron post, polished steel case bolt/spring with vertical pierced foot. Potance with moulding at end of foot, screwed to plate. Rectangular counter-potance riveted to plate. Worm and wheel set-up under barrel. Pillar plate with four square baluster pillars. Under dial stamped 'D', and scratched 'I Jurn' (?) next to the hinge. Fusee and chain, barrel with one lip, tangent set-up under barrel. Verge escapement. Train planted anti-clockwise.

BRASS EDGE: Gilt, brass, three feet, plate side scratched '5'.

DIAL: White enamel on copper with counter enamel, three feet. Radial Arabic 5 minute figures, dotted minute ring, radial Roman chapters, plain centre.

HANDS: Blued steel, beetle and poker.

INNER CASE: Plain silver. Inside body is a London hallmark 1780, case maker's mark 'IT' with pellet between in rectangular cameo. Cylindrical pendant with brass stirrup bow.

OUTER CASE (A): Plain silver, no marks, three watch papers.

WATCHPAPERS:
(B): Black on red 'E. Bromley. / WATCH / manufacturer / 8 Mount Street / HALIFAX. / Wedding Rings' and around edge 'To Make the watch go faster, turn the regulator the same way you set forward the hands & to go slow the contrary.' Written on the back '4.33 / Mr. Farrow / @ 5.'
(C): Black on white. 'Rowell. / Watch & Clock Maker / Silversmith & C. / OXFORD / Wedding & Mourning Rings' written on the back 'april 24 /58'.
(D): Black on white, angel holding a watch next to vase on a pedestal. On the front of the pedestal 'BOWEN / Watch & Clock / Manufacturer / 2 Tichborne St. / near PICCADILLY'. Around the edge 'Little monitor impart, / Some instruction to the heart, // Shrew the busy & the gay, / life is hasting away, // Follies cannot long endure, / Life's uncertain death is sure; // Happy those who wisely learn / Truth from error to discern; // Truth, immortal as the soul, / And unshaken as the pole.' Written on reverse '18 Nov 1837.'
