Description

A delicate front of silvered lace-paper in a design of lily of the valley flowers curved around from left and right to form a heart-shaped aperture at the centre. A cameo-embossed scene of Cupid and Hymen around a pudding with doves to left and right. A paper swag printed in silver ink with the verse: 'Ask not why I love thee / Why is heaven divine / I only know I cannot tell thee / But my heart is thine'. A blindstamp: 'WOOD' at lower right (just below the doves). Seen through the central aperture is a hand-coloured lithograph of a church which has been cut and pasted onto a watercolour background with a cut and pasted lace-paper frame (possibly concocted by the sender). A collage of real moss and fabric flowers are arranged below the lithograph inside the card, again possibly affixed by the sender of the valentine.
