Valentine card May This be the Emblem of Our Affection
A quarto valentine with embossed 'lace' border over gilded paper and embossed 'lace' frame at the centre around a hand-painted and collaged design of heartease and a pair of birds at upper centre and hand-painted, cut-paper flowers and leaves at lower centre. A cut-paper and gilded oval with heraldic garter belt bearing the motto: 'MAY THIS BE THE EMBLEM OF OUR AFFECTION'. At the centre, a cut-paper bouquet mounted on a dark blue background tied with applied pink silk ribbon. Cut-paper swags affixed to the paper with gilded finials and two of the swags inscribed in pen and blue ink with the mottos: 'Friendship' and 'Fidelity'. 'DOBBS' blind-stamped at lower centre.
