Valentine card
Printmaker: Unknown
Design for a valentine on cream wove paper. A drawing in graphite, charcoal and wash of a couple sitting in a garden arbor, a church seen in the background on the right. A border of what appear to be entwining flowers and leaves is sketched out around the drawing and continued to the lower edge of the page. A remnant of lined pink notepaper is adhered to the paper below the image. The composition of the drawing appears to be that seen in one of the plates from the Despondent Lover series, which were originally printed as etchings with aquatint in 1828 by Joseph Addenbrooke. See P.14346-R-L2, P.14346-R-2 and P.14346-R-3. It is not clear if P.14348-R-19 is a design for the original number or a copy of the finished print. The remains of a paper spine along the left edge suggests that the design may have been taken from a sketchbook. A fragment of paper with a hand-written verse in faded ink is attached to the paper below the image at the left edge and partially folded: "The birds carol sweetly, alll nature looks gay, / Nay spirits are high for this glorious day / now will away & haste down to the stile / My sweetheart is waiting I'm sure all this while ...". This is not the same verse that accompanies the plate from the Despondent Lover series.
